Lisbon is the stunning capital city of Portugal and is one of the most charismatic and vibrant cities of Europe. It is a city that effortlessly blends traditional heritage, with striking modernism and progressive thinking. As a holiday destination, Lisbon offers a rich and varied history, a buzzing nightlife and is blessed with a glorious year-round climate. Lisbon is a bustling and exciting city, that boasts a wide choice of activities and fascinating tourist attractions. The city has a welcoming and liberal atmosphere, while still embracing its deep-rooted heritage and extensive history. Lisbon will appeal to a diverse selection of ages and tourists; it can form a cultural trip, a nightlife extravaganza, a family holiday, a relaxed city-break or even as a base for a beach holiday. Lisbon has hot dry summers, pleasant springs and autumns, and mild, but possibly wet winters. The best time of year to visit Lisbon is in the late spring (May-June) when the days are bright and sunny, but the temperatures are not so high. The peak season is between June and August, and if you visit at this time of year, you should expect the city to feel crowded. The weather is suitable for spending time on the beach from May until the end of September.
Weather in Lisbon during January
January is the coolest month of the year in Lisbon but as it enjoys a sub-tropical Mediterranean climate, the winters are fairly mild. The weather here is twice as sunny as in London or Paris in January.
The average temperature reaches a high of 13°C (that's about 55°F), and at night can dip as low as 7°C (about 45°F). You will not see any days where it reaches 20°C. so even when sunny you will need a jacket. It has never gone below freezing however in the thirty years that records have been kept.
Sunrise is a little before 8 AM each day during the month and sunset slowly creeps up from 5:30 PM to close to 6 PM by the end of the month. This means about 10 hours of daylight daily, and on average 5 hours sunshine. Most of the month you will see some fog or other sort of visual obstruction for several hours per day.
Is Lisbon expensive for tourists?
Well, Lisbon is one of the least expensive capital cities in Europe to visit, and when compared to other major global cities, Lisbon provides exceptional value for money. The cost of accommodation is reasonably priced, and standards are high, but the real value of Lisbon is discovered when, using public transport, sightseeing or eating out. Generally, a mid-range tourist should expect to spend €100 per day while in Lisbon. This value does not include accommodation, flights or highly expensive gimmicky tours. Lisbon takes three days to explore fully, and the suggested spending money needed for these three days is around €290
